Lisbon Wedding Photographer

Lisbon Wedding Photographer

for Honest, Editorial & Candid Weddings

Your wedding photographs should feel like your wedding. Not like a photoshoot you had to perform for.

I’m Rita Santana, a Lisbon wedding photographer specialising in honest, documentary-inspired wedding photography with an editorial touch. I photograph weddings in Lisbon, Setúbal, Palmela, Azeitão and throughout Portugal, working with couples who want photographs that feel natural, personal and full of life.

Whether you’re planning an intimate Lisbon wedding, a destination wedding in Portugal, an elopement or a celebration with everyone you love under the same roof, my approach is simple: I want you to be present while I take care of the photographs.

I’ll guide you when you need direction, step in when something needs organising, and otherwise let things unfold naturally — the hugs, the happy tears, the ridiculous dance moves, the people you love and all the little moments you didn’t even realise were happening.

Because years from now, those are the photographs you’ll want to remember.

Wedding Photography in Lisbon That Feels Like You

Lisbon is one of my favourite places to photograph weddings because it gives you so much variety within a relatively small area.

From historic palaces and elegant hotels to modern venues, intimate restaurants and outdoor celebrations overlooking the city, there is no single way to get married in Lisbon.

And there shouldn’t be.

Your photographs should reflect the way you actually experience the day.

I don’t believe you need to spend hours posing for photographs or recreate moments that never happened. Instead, I combine documentary wedding photography with gentle direction and an editorial eye, creating a gallery that feels spontaneous but still beautifully considered.

You’ll get the real moments — and a little help from me when you want it.

Civil Weddings

Small doesn’t mean insignificant.

Civil weddings in Lisbon can be incredibly personal, whether you’re celebrating with just a handful of people or continuing the day with dinner and drinks somewhere special.

I’ll document the atmosphere, the people around you and all those fleeting moments that make the day yours.

Intimate Weddings

An intimate wedding gives you the chance to focus on what actually matters: the people you’re inviting, the experience you’re creating and the time you get to spend together.

My documentary approach works particularly well for smaller celebrations because there is space to notice the details, conversations and connections that might otherwise disappear in a bigger wedding.

Destination Weddings

Getting married in Lisbon from another country can feel exciting — and slightly overwhelming.

I’m used to working with couples planning their wedding in Portugal from abroad and can help you understand how photography fits into the timeline of your day, from getting ready and the ceremony through to dinner, speeches and the dance floor.

If you’re planning a destination wedding in Portugal, I photograph celebrations in Lisbon, Palmela, Setúbal, Azeitão, Comporta and other destinations across the country.

Elopements

An elopement can be just as meaningful as a wedding with 150 guests — sometimes even more intimate.

Whether you’re exchanging vows somewhere in Lisbon, heading towards Sintra or celebrating somewhere along the Portuguese coast, I’ll document the experience as it unfolds rather than turning it into a staged photoshoot.

Weddings at Lisbon Venues

Lisbon has no shortage of beautiful places to get married, and I’m always happiest when I can photograph both the venue and the people bringing it to life.

Some of the Lisbon-area venues and locations I’ve photographed or written about include:

  • Vandelli Botanical Garden
  • Palácio de São Marcos
  • Quinta Nova do Hespanhol
  • Pousada Castelo de Palmela
  • Quinta de Sant’Ana

A Documentary Approach with an Editorial Eye

I’ve been working as a full-time photographer since 2014, but my relationship with photography started much earlier.

I grew up around photography through my aunt’s photography shop, and that early connection with the medium stayed with me. I still love the physicality of photographs and the idea that an image can become something you hold, print and keep.

Today, my approach combines that love of real moments with an editorial sensibility.

I look for beautiful light, interesting compositions and all the small details that make an image work, but I never want aesthetics to come at the expense of what is actually happening.

You don’t need to know how to pose. You don’t need to be “good in front of the camera”. And you definitely don’t need to spend your wedding day performing for me.

I’ll give you direction when it helps, especially during portraits and group photographs, but the majority of your gallery will be built around what naturally happens.

The result is a collection of photographs that feels honest, emotional, relaxed and unmistakably yours.

What Working With Me Looks Like

Before the wedding

We’ll talk about your plans, the people who matter to you and what you’re imagining for the day.

I want to understand what is important to you rather than simply ticking boxes on a wedding photography timeline.

I’ll also help you think through the photography side of the day, particularly when it comes to timings, getting ready, portraits and making sure you actually have time to enjoy your wedding.

On the wedding day

My job is to photograph what’s happening without making you feel like you’re constantly being photographed.

I’ll be there to anticipate moments, notice the little things and step in when some gentle direction will make a photograph stronger.

If you need help organising a group photograph, I’ll take charge.

If something unexpected happens, I’ll adapt.

And if something wonderful happens that wasn’t in the timeline?

I’m probably already photographing it.

With a second photographer

For larger weddings or couples who want more coverage happening simultaneously, a second photographer can be added to your collection.

This is particularly useful when you want photographs of different moments happening at the same time (for example, both sides getting ready) or when you want more of those little reactions and interactions throughout the day.

After the wedding

After your wedding, your photographs are carefully edited and delivered in a private online gallery.

Your final gallery is delivered within 90 days, allowing me the time needed to properly edit and curate your photographs rather than rushing them out the door.

And because I’m a big believer in actually having photographs rather than just having files sitting on a computer, I also offer printed products including albums and print boxes within your online gallery – you don’t even have to leave the house to order!

Testimonials

What My Couples Say

There’s no greater compliment than being trusted with someone’s memories.

More than 100 couples have trusted me to photograph their weddings and celebrations since I started photographing professionally.

And while I love beautiful photographs, what matters even more to me is how couples feel throughout the experience.

Rita is an absolutely amazing photographer. You should definitely use her for any engagement or wedding photos. As she has a great grasp of knowledge of how to make a photo pop and look the best. We were extremely blessed to have someone special as her capture one of the biggest moments in our lives.

Rita was the photographer at our wedding and helped up capture our special day. She was incredibly professional and good at making us and our guests feel comfortable in front of a camera, and took excellent candid photos without us realizing. We cannot thank you enough for the incredible memories!

Rita made the entire experience feel effortless. From the very beginning, she helped plan every detail — offering guidance on the location, timing, and setup — while keeping everything completely stress-free. Her calm, reassuring approach made it easy to stay in the moment and focus on what really mattered. What truly sets Rita apart from other photographers is how personally invested she is in each experience. She doesn’t just show up with a camera; she genuinely cares about making the moment special. Her warmth, professionalism, and attention to detail made all the difference.

Rita was absolutely amazing to work with! She helped me capture my proposal beautifully at Cabo da Roca in Portugal this April. Despite being overseas, she made the planning easy with plenty of advice/suggestions, was easy to communicate with through WhatsApp/Google Meet, and was very thoughtful with her work the day of. We could not have asked for a better photographer to work with and are beyond grateful that she was a part of this special moment in our relationship!

Getting Married Beyond Lisbon?

Lisbon may be where many couples start their search, but Portugal has a lot more to offer.

I regularly work across Palmela, Setúbal, Azeitão, Arrábida, Comporta and other destinations throughout Portugal, so you don’t need to choose your photographer based solely on where your venue happens to be.

If you’re planning a destination wedding, I can travel to your venue and photograph your celebration wherever it takes place. Here are a few of my latest favorites:

Vandelli Botanical Garden

A beautiful Lisbon wedding venue with an unmistakable botanical atmosphere.

[Visit Vandelli’s Botanical Gardens in this Wedding]

Palácio de São Marcos

An elegant setting with plenty of character and beautiful opportunities for wedding photographs.

Quinta Nova do Hespanhol

A countryside wedding venue within easy reach of Lisbon, ideal for couples looking for something more relaxed and surrounded by nature.

Pousada Castelo de Palmela

For couples who want history, views and a distinctly Portuguese setting, Palmela is one of my favourite areas to photograph.

Quinta de Sant’Ana

A beautiful option for couples looking beyond the centre of Lisbon and towards the countryside north of the city.
